“A middle-school student in Minnesota has regained his right to wear at school a T-shirt bearing an abstinence message.

Officials at Hastings Middle School had initially prohibited seventh-grader Johnathon Kinney from wearing the T-shirt with the message “Virginity Rocks!” On April 26, two school teachers confronted Kinney about the shirt, informing him that it was offensive and should be covered up. School officials also warned Kinney against wearing the shirt again.

After contacting the principal about the incident — and finding he supported the teachers’ decision — Kinney’s parents contacted The Rutherford Institute. John Whitehead, president of the Institute, explains the sequence of events that followed.

“We sent a very strong legal letter saying we’re going to sue the school district because this is a First Amendment right of school students,” says the attorney. …”

“A study from the University of Manitoba has found that women who have had an abortion are nearly four times as likely to have problems with drugs and alcohol as those who have not.

Researchers also identified an association between mental disorders and abortion and suggested that doctors should screen for a history of abortion in women who present symptoms of anxiety, mood disorders and substance abuse.

Published in the April issue of the Canadian Journal of Psychology, the study said depression and substance abuse plague about half of American women who reported having an abortion, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.

Research involving more than 3,300 women showed that about 25 percent who had undergone an abortion acknowledged some substance abuse, while such abuse was found in only 7 percent of non-abortive women, the Free Press reported.

Women who had abortions were 3.8 times more likely to have substance use disorders than those who had not, even when an exposure to violence — which increases the odds of substance abuse — was factored in, the Toronto Sun reported. …”

“How do we achieve total health? Does it come from effective treatment of “whatever it is that ails us”? Isn’t there more to it?

For anyone associated with Loma Linda University’s School of Medicine, total health involves much more than just the treatment of disease. The university’s motto, “To Make Man Whole,” gives us a clue as to how the concept of lifestyle medicine has always figured directly into innovative approaches its practitioners take to restoring and nurturing good health.

At LLUSM it’s no secret that a total approach to healing is pivotal to wellness on a spiritual, mental, and physical level. And this is a defining point in its approach to health care, in training physicians, and in caring for patients.

What Is Lifestyle Medicine Anyway?
In simple terms, lifestyle medicine is the evidence-based practice of helping people use natural methods for the prevention and healing of disease. What happens when a heart patient receives a stenta device surgically implanted to open a clogged arterybut then receives no instruction on how to keep their heart healthy by modifying diet, increasing exercise, or managing stress? That patient gets a Band-Aid put on the problem, which offers only a temporary fix. Without educating that patient on how to prevent heart disease, the prognosis isn’t that good. The focus needs to shift from episodic care to prevention and wellness. …”

“Fraud always operates under the color of law. Look for fraud anywhere. You will find it in government, in politics, in religion, in money and finance and absolutely in organized medicine. Being alert for fraud is not paranoia but survival.

And just think of the millions who have suffered a living hell and then were sent to an early grave at the hands of “orthodox medicine.”

Yes, orthodox or organized medicine has the prettiest face of all and is almost untouchable. In fact, organized medicine, which should be called “organized promotion of sickness and death,” persecutes and prosecutes truth in healing with all the police power of government.

Orthodox medicine is modern medicine that promotes “treatment” but denies healing.

Money is in treating but never in curing. So-called “medical research” is hunting but never finding. This is the cloak of modern medicine.

In this instance, we have on our mind the millions of men, dead and alive, who have been victims of what Dr. David Williams calls “The Billion-Dollar Scam.” Dr. Williams, in his June 2009 Alternatives health newsletter, called vivid attention to the prostate cancer scam which is actually an industry under the color of conventional and orthodox medicine, sanctioned by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the force of law.

Yes, the force of law. Just try an alternative cure and see what happens to you.

“Individuals who are suffering from high blood pressure may want to consider supplementing their diet with a moderate amount of nuts, according to a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

For the research, a team of investigators collected data from 25 separate trials that were designed to investigate the health benefits linked to nut consumption. After analyzing the serum levels of 583 men and women, the researchers found that participants who consumed an average of 2.4 ounces of various nuts each day experienced a 5.1 percent total cholesterol concentration reduction. …”

“Convinced that he was the victim of an evil spell, a patient came to a physician with symptoms unrelated to any known disease or syndrome. The doctor placed before the patient two glass tubes, one filled with hydrogen peroxide, the other with plain water, though both looked identical. He then drew blood from the patient and mixed it with the hydrogen peroxide. The mixture immediately started to bubble and fizz, which the patient believed was the work of the evil spell.

The doctor then gave the patient a simple saline injection, telling him that this would break the spell. After a while, he then drew blood from the patient and mixed it with the plain water in the other glass. There was no bubbling or fizzing, “proof” that the spell was broken. The patient left feeling cured, so much so that he brought all his friends to the doctor to be “cured,” as well.

This story shows, indeed, how powerful an influence our mind has on our bodies, the subject for this week’s lesson.”

I am reproducing here an article I wrote several years ago because I feel that it is as relevant today as it was then:

*********
I am borrowing the title of this article from the latest issue of the “AIMS Journal,”the official publication of the “Adventist International Medical Society,” which dedicated the entire issue to the topic of smoking cessation program sponsored by the church for many decades. The editors of this prestigious publication, of course, borrowed their title from a book published by the eminent nonagenarian Harold Shryock, a former dean of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, approximately half a century ago, whose books I had read when I was a teenager, but had the pleasure of meeting only a few years ago.

Humble Beginnings. As I read this latest issue of the “Aims Journal,” I could not avoid a feeling of amazement at how God could utilize such small beginnings in order to benefit millions of smokers around the world who felt powerless in their efforts to quit smoking on their own. The magazine includes the story of one individual, a Los Angeles lawyer named Lauren Wright, who was able to rid himself of this addictive habit “cold turkey,” but, as you can imagine, he is rather an exceptional case. Most smokers need the intervention of physicians and psychologists experienced in the smoking cessation programs, and this is where SDA physicians have provided a great service to humanity.

“MSGThese initials mean Monosodium Glutamate. It is the main flavor enhancer in your local Chinese take-out place. Like Mrs. Dash, MSG enhances flavor especially in frozen and processed foods… and causes people who are allergic to it to experience headaches, rashes and muscle pains. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics removed MSG from all products for infants under the age of one after injections into lab animals showed nerve cell damage!

Despite the fact that MSG has been proven a poisonous substance, it is so widely used that you might not even think where it might be. Cans of tuna? You bet! Turkey breast cold cuts? Absolutely, in some brands! And the result: an increase in neurodegerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, a serious rise in cases of asthma, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches and heart trouble.

Bottom line: Stay away from MSG. Check the label of everything you buy and avoid the brands that include it. And when ordering food from a restaurant, they are obligated by law to NOT include MSG if you specifically tell them you are allergic. Sounds like a plan.

MaltodextrinMaltodextrin is essentially a powder derived from potatoes or corn and when combined with other spices and ingredients it becomes a tasty coating for snack foods. This powder food additive is found in items like flavored potato chips, pretzels and crackers. …

High Fructose Corn Syrup. This sweetener has been called the main culprit in the rise in childhood obesity in the United States… but has been given a clean bill by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Talk about bipolar! No wonder we don’t know what is going on with our health. Well, here’s the scoop…

Yes it’s true that the FDA did a 30-year study and found a correlation between HFCS and obesity and that it is worse for your health than plain sugar. …

“Researchers say drinking two or more sweetened soft drinks each week may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

According to Reuters, the study that appears in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, found that individuals who drank two or more non-diet sodas each week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic cancer.

Researchers studied more than 60,000 men and women in Singapore for a period of 14 years for their results.

They say that the sugar in soft drinks may be to blame for the high incidence of the cancer since the insulin the body uses to metabolize sugar is made in the pancreas.

“The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth,” the study’s lead author Mark Pereira said. …”

“Instead of being viewed as lazy or slackers, workers who catch 40 winks in the afternoon may be gaining a bit more respect or at least a bit more understanding. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found that napping an hour can dramatically restore and boost your brain power. Amazingly, they found a nap can actually make you smarter.

On the other hand, the more hours we spend awake, the more sluggish our minds become. These findings should give pause to college students who pull “all nighters” cramming for finals. The new study found this practice decreases the ability to learn by nearly 40 percent.

“Sleep not only rights the wrong of prolonged wakefullness, but at a neurocognitive level, it moves you beyond where you were before you took a nap,” Matthew Walker, an assistant professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and lead investigator, said in a statement. …”

“Bingeing on high-calorie foods may be as addictive as cocaine or nicotine, and could cause compulsive eating and obesity, according to a new study.

The findings in a study of animals cannot be directly applied to human obesity, but may help in understanding the condition and in developing therapies to treat it, researchers wrote in the journal “Nature Neuroscience.”

The study, involving rats, found that overconsumption of high-calorie food can trigger addiction-like responses in the brain and that high-calorie food can turn rats into compulsive eaters in a laboratory setting, the article said.

The scientists also found decreased levels of a specific dopamine receptor a brain chemical that allows a feeling of reward in overweight rats, as has been reported in humans addicted to drugs, the article said.

“Obesity may be a form of compulsive eating. Other treatments in development for other forms of compulsion, for example drug addiction, may be very useful for the treatment of obesity,” researcher Paul Kenny of The Scripps Research Institute in Florida said in a telephone interview. …”

“HAVANA — It perhaps was not the endorsement President Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress were looking for.

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on Thursday declared passage of American health care reform “a miracle” and a major victory for Obama’s presidency, but couldn’t help chide the United States for taking so long to enact what communist Cuba achieved decades ago.

“We consider health reform to have been an important battle and a success of his (Obama’s) government,” Castro wrote in an essay published in state media, adding that it would strengthen the president’s hand against lobbyists and “mercenaries.”

But the Cuban leader also used the lengthy piece to criticize the American president for his lack of leadership on climate change and immigration reform, and for his decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, among many other things.

And he said it was remarkable that the most powerful country on earth took more than two centuries from its founding to approve something as basic as health benefits for all. …”

“TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Attorneys general from 13 states sued the federal government Tuesday, claiming the landmark health care overhaul bill is unconstitutional just seven minutes after President Barack Obama signed it into law.

The lawsuit was filed in Pensacola after the Democratic president signed the bill the House passed Sunday night.

“The Constitution nowhere authorizes the United States to mandate, either directly or under threat of penalty, that all citizens and legal residents have qualifying health care coverage,” the lawsuit says.

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is taking the lead and is joined by attorneys general from South Carolina, Nebraska, Texas, Michigan, Utah, Pennsylvania, Alabama, South Dakota, Idaho, Washington, Colorado and Louisiana. All are Republicans except James “Buddy” Caldwell of Louisiana, who is a Democrat.

Some states are considering separate lawsuits and still others may join the multistate suit. Some states are also looking at other ways to avoid participating in the overhaul. Virginia and Idaho have passed legislation aimed at blocking the bill’s insurance requirement from taking effect, and the Republican-led Legislature in Florida is trying to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to ask voters to exempt the state from the federal law’s requirements. At least 60 percent of voters would have to approve. …”

“United States researchers have found that walnut consumption significantly reduces the growth of tumors in mice genetically programmed to develop prostate cancer.

In the study, lead researcher Paul Davis, a professional nutritionist working with the University of California, Davis Cancer Center, fed a diet of whole walnuts to a group of lab mice predisposed to prostate cancer and compared the progression of the disease to that of subjects on a normal diet.

After 18 weeks of follow-up, Davis and his colleagues found that consuming the human equivalent of 2.4 ounces of walnuts per day resulted in a 30 percent to 40 percent tumor growth reduction compared to mice in the control group.

The investigators also found that mice on the walnut diet had lower blood levels of insulin-like growth factor, which is a protein that had been linked to prostate cancer in separate studies.

“This study shows that when mice with prostate tumors consume an amount of walnuts that could easily be eaten by a man, tumor growth is controlled,” concluded Davis. “This leaves me very hopeful that it could be beneficial in patients.” …”

“Liberals keep complaining that Republicans don’t have a plan for reforming health care in America. I have a plan!

It’s a one-page bill creating a free market in health insurance. Let’s all pause here for a moment so liberals can Google the term “free market.”

Nearly every problem with health care in this country – apart from trial lawyers and out-of-date magazines in doctors’ waiting rooms – would be solved by my plan.

In the first sentence, Congress will amend the McCarran-Ferguson Act to allow interstate competition in health insurance.

We can’t have a free market in health insurance until Congress eliminates the antitrust exemption protecting health insurance companies from competition. If Democrats really wanted to punish insurance companies, which they manifestly do not, they’d make insurers compete.

Of course, an insurance company has to be able to refuse new customers with “pre-existing conditions.” Otherwise, everyone would just wait to get sick to buy insurance. It’s the same reason you can’t buy fire insurance on a house that’s already on fire.

In addition to saving taxpayer money and providing better health insurance, my plan also saves trees by being 2,199 pages shorter than the Democrats’ plan. …”
